Claus Stäcker

Claus Stäcker joined DW in 2013 as head of Africa programs - including radio programs, online, social media and TV content in Amharic, English, French, Hausa, Kiswahili, Portuguese and German. Stäcker studied journalism in Leipzig. He started his professional career at the German news agency ADN/ddp and the public broadcaster MDR. In 1992 and 1994 he participated in university exchange programs, one at the University of Cape Town where he also finished post-gradual studies in Cultural History of Africa. During that time he witnessed the end of Apartheid and the resulting historic elections as a freelance correspondent for the German press and internee for the renowned South African weekly Mail and Guardian (back then Weekly Mail). After further study at the US School of Journalism at the University of Missouri and an RIAS Berlin commission internship at CNN, Atlanta he reported as freelancer from different African countries. From 2008 to 2013 he worked as correspondent for southern Africa Germany’s public broadcaster ARD in Johannesburg.
